Calgary, Alberta (June 23, 2019) — Forge FC dealt a blow to Cavalry FC’s title chase, handing the Calgary side their first loss of the Spring season. The win keep’s Forge FC championship hopes alive — although Cavalry need only one point from two games to secure the inaugural title.

Bend, Don’t Break

Forge FC took the lead on a sweetly taken Kyle Bekker volley in the 5th minute. From that point forward, Cavalry showed why they were undefeated going into the match. Tommy Wheeldon Jr.’s side pressed the Forge FC defense, hitting the post on a number of occasions and pressing Triston Henry into acrobatic saves.

A Different Game Plan

While Forge tend to go out and try to boss their opponents with possession, quick ball movement out of the back and strong counter-attacking out of midfield pressure, this game was quite different. Part of that is due to the strength of the Cavalry side, forcing coach Bobby Smyrniotis to have a different approach. The end of game stat sheet shows a very different look than what Forge FC fans are used to. Only 35 percent possession and a single shot on target for the visitors, with the home side racking up 13 shots, six on target and a whopping 65 percent possession.

Too Late to Change Fate

Although Forge FC keep their Championship hopes alive, that may not last long. Cavalry needs a single win to cement the spring title. A loss and a draw would provide Forge FC the narrowest window possible. With both teams on 22 points, it would come down to goal difference. The teams are currently level in that category at plus-9.

Even though Cavalry are likely to get the points they need to secure the title, the burgeoning rivalry between the two clubs will help make the Fall season even more exciting.

Looking Forward

Forge FC go to last-place FC Edmonton for their final game of the Spring season on Wednesday. When the teams last met, Forge FC took a 2-0 win at home. Meanwhile, Cavalry head to York9 FC on Wednesday for a chance at the title. Whatever happens, things are setting up for a magnificent finish to the inaugural Canadian Premier League season.
