Orlando, Florida (Feb. 18, 2019) — Portugal is filled with sunshine, beautiful beaches and natural warmth.

Because of this, Nani should feel right at home in Florida. On Monday afternoon, Orlando City SC announced the signing of the Portuguese international to a three-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed to the public.

He will wear No. 17. Meanwhile, Nani joins the club as a designated player.

Nani, a winger, will join the team for training camp shortly. His signing was on a free transfer from Sporting CP in Portugal, where he most recently featured. It’s the same club he started his career with, making 58 appearances from 2005-07. He returned to Sporting CP in 2018 and has since made 13 appearances.

Nani, whose name is actually Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha, is most notably known for his time with Manchester United. He made 230 appearances, across all competitions, where he scored 41 goals from 2007-15. The 32-year-old captured four English Premier League titles, two F.A. League Cups and a UEFA Championship title during his time with the Red Devils.

“This is an exciting day for our organization,” Orlando City SC EVP of Soccer Operations Luiz Muzzi said. “Nani brings tremendous experience to our roster. He’s a dynamic winger with quality abilities to move and cross the ball, impact games and lead the offensive play.”

Nani has plenty of experience at the international level. Since 2006, Nani has recorded 112 appearances for Portugal, netting 24 goals. He featured for Portugal in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which was held in Brazil. However, during last summer’s World Cup in Russia, Nani did not make it from the preliminary roster to the 23-man roster.

Nani also featured for Portugal in the UEFA Euro in 2016 — a tournament that Portugal ended up winning — and the FIFA Confederations Cup, held in Russia, in 2017. In the Confederations Cup, Nani scored the game-winning goal against New Zealand.

Meanwhile, with Orlando City SC, Nani joins a list of defenders that includes Danilo Acosta, Joao Moutinho, Ruan and Lamine Sane. Also, Orlando City SC head coach is James O’Connor.
