Kansas City, Mo. (January 18, 2018)- Sporting KC have acquired the services of Argentine center-back, Emiliano Amor, on loan for the 2018 season. The loan deal has an option to buy at the end of the year, as required by MLS rules.
Sporting KC Acquire Emiliano Amor on Loan for the 2018 Season
Sporting KC have needed to add some center-back depth, as the team is getting long in the tooth. Matt Besler’s contract expires after this season, and after Ike Opara, the next guy on the roster is Amer Didic, who has yet to make his MLS debut. Kevin Ellis has seemingly disappeared from the picture, after he and the club agreed to a “mutual separation” during the 2017 season. Ellis has been shopped and a trade could be imminent as reported earlier this week.
Emiliano Amor comes in to give Sporting KC four active center-backs on the roster ahead of tomorrows Amateur Draft. Amor made his debut with Velez Sarsfield at 19 years old. He stands at six foot tall and is center-back. His player mold is almost in the spitting image of Ike Opara. He’s a great 1v1 defender and can time his jump into the attack.
This highlight video does a good job of getting a look at what he brings to the table:
Currently, transfermarkt.com has him valued at roughly $1.5 million. One could assume his agreed upon buy option is a little lower than that considering he drops out of contract with Velez in 2019.
This is a very good move for Sporting KC. He fits the type of center-back that they like: someone who is cerebral enough to read the game, and has the instincts to react and get the ball, then re-distribute the ball into the attack. He will slot nicely into this system and can hopefully provide consistent, and quality depth at the Center-Back position.
