COMMERCE CITY, CO (January 11, 2018) – There has been much speculation regarding the Colorado Rapids Front Office throughout the last several months. It took the club several months to appoint Head Coach Anthony Hudson. It’s been since the summer of 2017 that Sporting Director Padraig Smith has been Interim General Manager. Well, that interim tag has been removed.

Interim No More: Padraig Smith Named Colorado Rapids General Manager, Wayne Brant Promoted

The Colorado Rapids announced today that Padraig Smith has been named the club’s new Executive Vice President. He is formally now the General Manager (not Interim General Manager). Additionally, Wayne Brant has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Business Operations.

“For both Pádraig and Wayne, these are well-deserved promotions. They have managed this transition period very well, and given their combined knowledge and experience, we look forward to watching them guide this club to success both on and off the field,” said Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, Matt Hutchings.

Smith came to the Rapids in 2015 as Sporting Director. Prior to that, he spent time with UEFA and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), including being a part of UEFA’s Financial Analysis Group. He was the FAI Head of Finance from 2010-2011, where he set precedent with the first mandatory salary cap in European League Football. He has been the Colorado Rapids General Manager on an Interim basis since 2017.

“I’m delighted about the direction we’re heading as a club. I want to thank the Kroenke family and the KSE executive management team for the opportunity to lead this club. Both Wayne and I will do everything in our power to bring another MLS Cup to our supporters and the Colorado community as a whole,” Smith said.

Since joining the Rapids, Smith has taken charge of front office decisions and has steered the ship this whole off-season as the club underwent a coaching move and other significant changes.

Brant has been at the club since 2007. He has been behind several key international games being hosted at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park as well as the 2015 MLS All-Star Game. He is being promoted from the role of Vice President of Business Operations. He will now manage the strategic communications initiatives, including marketing, fan experience, and the fan advisory council.

“I’m grateful for the faith shown in both Padraig and myself by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and am very enthusiastic about our club’s future. The popularity of Major League Soccer is at an all-time high, and we look forward to representing our terrific fans in the best possible way,” Brant said.

The Rapids kick off their preseason later this month and play their first competitive match on February 20 against Toronto FC in the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League.
