The New York Red Bulls have traded away Sacha Kljestan to Orlando City SC. The Red Bulls sent Kljestan, as well as $150,000 in Targeted Allocation Money. In return, the Red Bulls received winger Carlos Rivas and defender Tommy Redding. This ends a very long speculation period of departure for Red Bulls Captain.
New York Red Bulls Trade Sacha Kljestan to Orlando City SC
Kljestan had been linked with several other clubs this off-season. In addition to Orlando, Los Angeles FC as well as Minnesota United FC were linked with the top assist man in the league during the past two seasons. This was a man much needed in the number 10 role at Orlando after the departure of Kaka. Only time will tell if Kljestan can fill the void left by a true legend of this great sport.
The Red Bulls get some much needed help with this trade. Redding adds depth to a very suspect back line for the Red Bulls. He started in 14 of his 18 MLS appearances last season accumulating just over 1,400 minutes in MLS play. With Rivas, the Red Bulls bolster an attack that certainly had its ups and downs last season. Rivas scored five goals and tallied five assists in 30 MLS appearances last season for Orlando City.
With the dealing of Kljestan, this is the second straight season they have dealt away their captain. However, this time around it was much more expected. The Red Bulls are clearly looking to become faster and more dynamic in 2018. While Kljestan was a talented player for the Red Bulls, he didn’t seem to have the speed to be an impact with the Red Bulls newer formation switches. In the end, this was a trade that seems like both teams will be able to benefit from in the upcoming MLS season.
