KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sporting KC have unveiled their 2017 Expansion Draft protection list along with the rest of the league. Sporting KC pulled no surprises with their list and leave very few players who could be selected, unprotected.

Sporting KC Reveal 2017 Expansion Draft Protection List

Sporting KC’s protection list for the upcoming expansion draft had no real surprises in it. The list is as follows: Tim Melia, Ike Opara, Matt Besler, Graham Zusi, Roger Espinoza, Ilie Sanchez, Cristian Lobato, Jimmy Medranda, James Musa, Benny Feilhaber, and Gerso.

In addition to those eleven, Gianluca Busio, Erik-Palmer Brown, Kevin Ellis, and Daniel Salloi are automatically protected due to their home-grown player status.

The following Sporting KC players are available for selection in the expansion draft: Adrian Zendejas, Alexander Tambakis, Andrew Dykstra, Saad Abdul-Salaam, Amer Didic, Seth Sinovic, Colton Storm, Soni Mustivar, Kharlton Belmar, Latif Blessing, Cameron Iwasa, Kenwyne Jones, Cameron Porter, Diego Rubio, and Soony Saad.

Sporting KC and Atlanta United FC made a trade during the half-day trade window on Sunday, to acquire Tambakis and Kenwyne Jones. They sent away Tyler Pasher and Kevin Oliveira to help remove international spots. By going from six international slots, to four, Sporting KC narrowed down the amount of international players required to be protected from three to one. If they had left it, they would have been required to protect at least one player whose contract was up and they had no intention of bringing back.

Saad Abdul-Salaam and Latif Blessing seem like the only two players who could be selected from this list, but there seem to be better overall options available. LAFC have quite the list to choose from, and frankly, none of the Sporting KC players really scream “must take pieces.” Saad Abdul-Salaam will probably draw the most intrigue of the SKC players, but as mentioned before, there are plenty of good options elsewhere.
