PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY (July 7, 2018) — Sky Blue FC fans welcomed back Samantha Kerr with opens arms this past weekend.

The former Sky Blue FC striker joined the Chicago Red Stars this past off-season, via trade. Against her former club, Kerr scored her 50th NWSL goal.

Samantha Kerr Tallies Hat-Trick, Reaches 50 NWSL Goals in Chicago Red Stars Victory

The Red Stars went on to defeat Sky Blue FC, who are still winless in NWSL regular-season action, 3-1 at Yurcak Field.

Kerr’s 50th goal came in the 46th minute. However, the Australian international scored a goal before and after the milestone goal to finish the game with a hat-trick.

After the match, Kerr expressed her excitement on the hat-trick, win, and milestone on her personal Twitter account.

“Thank you to every team mate that has been apart of my 50 goals. ❤️ big week from @chiredstarsPR , so pumped to be apart of this team!” Kerr wrote.”

Alyssa Mautz assisted Kerr’s first goal while Yuki Nagasato assisted her final two goals. Nagasato ended her streak of scoring in consecutive matches as she finished with three goals in the last three contests.

Meanwhile, Sky Blue FC only had one tally. Imani Dorsey scored her first-ever NWSL goal in the 73rd minute. Savannah McCaskill, a fellow rookie, assisted the goal for the former Duke University forward.

After the match, Denise Reddy said that her side put themselves in a “difficult situation” after Kerr’s quick second half goal.

“As a team, we have to work more consistently throughout the game,” Reddy said. “We have to stay committed to our formation and how we play. That is what we will take away from tonight as we start building upon next week.”

Three Takeaways

  1. A trade paid off: For a while, Kerr wasn’t finding the back of the net for Chicago. However, three goals against a former club can do wonders for self-confidence. She now has eight goals in 12 appearances — and starts — for the Red Stars. Meanwhile, also involved in the Kerr-to-Chicago trade was Carli Lloyd, who went to Sky Blue. Reddy must be scratching her head at Lloyd’s plummet and Kerr’s success.
  2. Looking to move up: The Red Stars are currently in fourth place. If the NWSL season ended today, Chicago would be joining the Orlando Pride, Seattle Reign and North Carolina Courage in the post-season. Right now, Chicago is in a race to keep that spot, or even move up.
  3. Rosie makes her debut: Rosie White made her debut for the Chicago Red Stars in the 86th minute. The former Boston Breakers midfielder relieved Nagasato of her duties. The addition of White to the squad gives Rory Dames even more depth than he already had.
