Stop me if you’ve heard it before: “Sporting KC dominated but were only able to come away with one goal.” While at first glance it looks like the Sporting KC from last season reared it’s ugly head, it’s not.

Jimmy Medranda wasn’t great defensively and was well out of position, but was playing through a lot of pain, according to Sporting KC manager, Peter Vermes. He was subbed out 30 minutes in and that ended most, if not all of Minnesota’s attacking joy down their right flank.

Khiry Shelton put Sporting KC on the board less than ten minutes into the game, when he got on the end of a corner kick, and headed home his first goal in a Sporting KC uniform.

Minnesota United answered through Darwin Quintero, who ran by two Sporting KC defenders, unmarked and found space between the center-backs as Miguel Ibarra whipped in a cross. The initial header was poor, straight at Tim Melia. But, fortunately for Quintero, Melia made a mess of the header and spilled an easy rebound right back to Quintero who finished his second chance.

After that, it was all Sporting KC. They enjoyed 61% of the possession in the match, took 24 shots, and sent ten on frame. Shuttleworth kept on making stops though, keeping Sporting KC out of the net. His best save of the evening came off a venomous half volley from Johnny Russell, which he did incredibly well to react and push the ball over the bar.

Sporting KC stay atop the Western Conference with the draw, and will turn around and face the Columbus Crew on Sunday, May 27th, a 6:00pm ET kickoff on Fox Sports One.

Minnesota United, who should be quite happy to escape a home match with a point (that’s concerning!), will stay sixth in the Western Conference at this moment and time, but could drop to seventh if Houston wins their current match (Up 1-0 on Chicago at time of publication). Their next match is Saturday, May 26th, as they face Montreal Impact at 8pm ET.
