Green Energy for New York Red Bulls: Team Announces Partnership With Covanta

The New York Red Bulls announced a partnership with Covanta, a renewable energy company based in Morristown, NJ. Covanta is a leading company producing energy from waste. They have a municipal waste facility in Newark, less than two miles away from Red Bull Arena in Harrison.

“We are proud to be named the Official Energy Partner of the New York Red Bulls,” said Sami Kabbani, Covanta’s senior vice president, Energy in a press release. “With less than two miles separating Covanta’s Energy-from-Waste facility in Newark, NJ from Red Bull Arena in Harrison, the partnership takes advantage of locally-produced renewable energy that directly benefits the surrounding community and also continues to keep trash out of landfills.”

New York Red Bulls Announce Partnership With Covanta

The partnership announced today stands to greatly reduce Red Bull Arena’s carbon footprint by converting energy from waste instead of fossil fuels. It will also impact the amount of waste going to landfills. Trash from the 25,000-seat arena will be sent to the nearby facility and the resulting energy will be used to power the arena.

Fans will be able to learn about sustainable energy with displays in the arena and activities in the BULLevard, the fan-participation area outside the arena on gamedays. Specially marked receptacles will be available throughout the arena to collect waste for the facility.

RBNY General Manager Marc De Grandpre expressed the club’s enthusiasm about the relationship: “Our club is thrilled to partner with Covanta […]With this partnership, Red Bull Arena will now be powered by 100 percent renewable energy.” Covanta currently converts enough waste to power one million homes.

Sustainable energy is in use around the world. Some countries have reduced their landfill contributions by 99 percent by using companies such as Covanta.
