Colorado Rapids Sign Forward Enzo Martinez From USL-Affiliate Charlotte Independence
The 27-year-old was drafted in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of North Carolina by Real Salt Lake. Martinez never appeared for the MLS team, and a year later went on loan to the Carolina Railhawks (now North Carolina FC) of the NASL. That move then became permanent.
“Enzo has really stood out for us this preseason. He’s been with us from the first day of training camp and has impressed everyone with his quality and work ethic. His résumé at the USL level speaks for itself and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do in Major League Soccer,” said Rapids Executive Vice President & General Manager, Pádraig Smith.
In 2015, Martinez moved to Charlotte Independence of the USL. He had his best two seasons in 2016 and 2017, scoring eight and 17 goals in those years, respectively. Those two seasons earned Martinez Best XI finishes in the league. He was also nominated for USL MVP in both those years.
“I want to say thank you to all the staff and fans in Charlotte who helped make this move possible,” said Martinez. “But looking forward, I could not be happier to join the Colorado Rapids. The project underway here is really special and I can’t wait to get started – it’s exciting.”
RSL still held the Uruguayan’s MLS rights. To acquire them, the Rapids have sent a 2021 MLS SuperDraft fourth-round pick to their Rocky Mountain Cup Rivals.
