NEW YORK, NY (December 13, 2017) – Two clubs made moves in the 2017 MLS Waiver Draft. Colorado Rapids selected defender Kip Colvey, formerly of the San Jose Earthquakes. Former LA Galaxy goalkeeper Clement Diop was selected by Montreal Impact.

Colvey signed with San Jose after being drafted in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. He was on the team the last two seasons, but only played in four league games (all in 2016).

He will reunite with Rapids Head Coach Anthony Hudson. Hudson called up Colvey to the New Zealand National Team on several occasions. Colvey has played 15 times for his national team. A versatile player, Colvey could be a wing back option for the Pids.

Clement Diop came to the states after playing for Amiens Sporting Club in the third division in France. He played with LA Galaxy II in the USL in 2015 before signing an MLS contract with the Galaxy.

In two season, Diop played in 17 MLS games, recording just two clean sheets. Diop struggled significantly in 2017, making highlight reel blunders to cost his team points in several occasions. A change of scenery could do Diop wonders. At the very least, he’ll be training ground practice for the Impact striker.

Per MLS:

“The Waiver Draft consisted of players who had been waived by their clubs but didn’t meet the minimum years of service requirement for the Re-Entry Draft or Free Agency. Under-contract players who were selected in the Waiver Draft would’ve been automatically added to the drafting club’s roster.

Clubs that claimed out-of-contract players would’ve had to issue a genuine offer to the selected player.”

There were 57 other players available in the Waiver Draft. They are now free to sign with any team in the league.
