LA Galaxy Preseason Presents Several Good Tests
The Galaxy preseason schedule is as follows:
Monday January 23: Players report to StubHub Center.
Tuesday February 7: LA Galaxy vs. Club Tijuana at StubHub Center (Los Angeles, CA)
Saturday February 11: LA Galaxy vs. San Jose Earthquakes at Cashman Field (Las Vegas, NV)
Wednesday February 15 – Saturday February 18: Training in Santa Barbara, CA
Saturday February 18: LA Galaxy vs. Alashkert FC at Westmont College (Santa Barbara, CA)
Saturday February 25: LA Galaxy vs. Portland Timbers at StubHub Center
Saturday March 4: LA Galaxy Season Opener vs. FC Dallas at StubHub Center
The Galaxy preseason is nearly six weeks long and features several good match ups. They will play their first game against Club Tijuana, who just won the Apertura in Liga MX. While they’ll be playing a reserve roster most likely, it will still be an excellent challenge for the young players on the Galaxy who play in that match.
After that, the Galaxy play two Western Conference MLS teams in the Portland Timbers and San Jose Earthquakes. The Timbers are for the most part in tact, so they could be a good measuring stick for the Galaxy. Can they gel in a month in a way that they can go head-to-head with a decent team that has previous continuity?
The Quakes, like LA, are going through a significant changes this off-season. They might not provide as great of a test from a continuity stand point, but it’s still the California Clasico.
The Galaxy will also play Armenian side Alashkert FC. While the Armenian league might not be on the level of MLS, they’re still second in their league. That has to count for something.
The Galaxy preseason doesn’t force them to do a lot of traveling, and provides several good opportunities for them to experiment.
